MegaNova Agent API vs OpenAI API: What's Different?
Meta Description: Side-by-side comparison of MegaNova Agent API and OpenAI API. Understand authentication, endpoints, character persistence, and when to use each for your AI project.
Keywords: MegaNova API vs OpenAI, agent API comparison, AI character API, OpenAI compatible API, MegaNova Studio developer, AI API differences, character persistence API
TL;DR
Authentication
OpenAI:
from openai import OpenAI
client = OpenAI(api_key="sk-...") # Bearer token in Authorization header
MegaNova (native):
POST https://studio-api.meganova.ai/api/agents/v1/{api_key}/chat
The API key is part of the URL path, not a header. No separate auth header needed.
MegaNova (OpenAI-compatible):
from openai import OpenAI
client = OpenAI(
api_key="agent_xxx...",
base_url="https://studio-api.meganova.ai/api/agents/v1/agent_xxx..."
)
Drop-in replacement — same SDK, different credentials and base URL.
Sending a Message
OpenAI:
response = client.chat.completions.create(
model="gpt-4o",
messages=[
{"role": "system", "content": "You are a stoic samurai named Kael..."},
{"role": "user", "content": "Who are you?"}
]
)
print(response.choices[0].message.content)
You define the persona in every system message. You manage the full message history. You pick the model.
MegaNova native /chat:
import requests
response = requests.post(
f"https://studio-api.meganova.ai/api/agents/v1/{api_key}/chat",
json={
"message": "Who are you?",
"conversation_id": "optional-uuid" # omit to start fresh
}
)
data = response.json()
print(data["response"])
print(data["conversation_id"]) # save this for next turn
No system message needed — persona, behavior rules, and psychology are all loaded from the Blueprint you built in Studio.
MegaNova OpenAI-compatible /chat/completions:
response = client.chat.completions.create(
model="agent", # always "agent" — model is set in Studio
messages=[{"role": "user", "content": "Who are you?"}]
)
Response Format
OpenAI response:
{
"choices": [{
"message": {
"role": "assistant",
"content": "I am GPT-4o, a large language model..."
}
}],
"usage": { "total_tokens": 120 }
}
MegaNova native /chat response:
{
"response": "Character's reply text",
"conversation_id": "uuid-to-continue-conversation",
"message_id": "uuid",
"agent_name": "Kael",
"tokens_used": 150,
"memories_used": 2,
"status": "complete"
}
Notable extras: conversation_id for continuity, memories_used showing how many memory entries were injected, status field (useful for tool-confirmation workflows).
Conversation Memory
OpenAI: You maintain the full message history and send it on every request:
history = []
while True:
user_input = input("You: ")
history.append({"role": "user", "content": user_input})
resp = client.chat.completions.create(model="gpt-4o", messages=history)
reply = resp.choices[0].message.content
history.append({"role": "assistant", "content": reply})
print("AI:", reply)
Context window management is your problem. At 128k tokens, you start truncating.
MegaNova: Pass the same conversation_id — the API handles history, memory injection, and context management:
conversation_id = None
while True:
user_input = input("You: ")
resp = requests.post(url, json={
"message": user_input,
"conversation_id": conversation_id
}).json()
conversation_id = resp["conversation_id"] # persist across turns
print("Agent:", resp["response"])
Character Consistency
OpenAI: Persona only persists as long as you keep sending the system message. In long conversations it drifts. You need to re-inject the system prompt, implement guard rails, and tune the model yourself.
MegaNova: Consistency is enforced by the agent's Blueprint — Reaction Rules, Never Do list, Identity Reinforcement all load automatically on every turn. The /chat/confirm endpoint handles tool actions that require user approval before execution.
Tool Confirmation Flow
OpenAI tool use follows a tool_calls → tool_results loop you implement yourself.
MegaNova has a dedicated endpoint for pending actions:
POST /agents/v1/{api_key}/chat/confirm
{ "message_id": "uuid", "approved": true }
When an agent wants to take an action (send email, call external API, etc.) it pauses and returns status: "pending_confirmation". Your app calls /confirm to approve or reject.
When to Use Each
Use MegaNova Agent API when:
- Your character's persona is already defined in Blueprint Editor
- You want conversation memory and consistency without building it yourself
- You need tool confirmation gates in your workflow
- You're building on top of a character you created in Studio
Use OpenAI API directly when:
- You need full control over every system message and model version
- You're building a general-purpose assistant (not a specific character)
- Your use case doesn't fit the agent persona model
- You need OpenAI-specific features (Assistants, fine-tuning, vision, etc.)
Use MegaNova's /chat/completions (OpenAI-compatible) when:
- You have existing OpenAI SDK code and want to swap in a MegaNova character
- You're integrating with a tool that expects an OpenAI-compatible endpoint
- You want the simplest migration path
