How to Set Up Claude (via MegaNova AI) on JanitorAI for Richer Storytelling

DeepSeek is fast and free. But if you've been doing long-form roleplay for a while, you've probably noticed a ceiling — responses that feel mechanical during emotional scenes, characters that drift out of voice, or prose that gets repetitive across a long session.

That's where Claude stands out. Anthropic's models are widely regarded as the best for narrative writing: they hold character voice longer, write with more texture, and handle emotionally layered scenes with noticeably more nuance. The tradeoff is that Claude isn't free. But through MegaNova AI's proxy, you can access Claude models with a small credit balance — and a little goes a long way.

This guide walks you through the full setup, step by step.

Why Claude for JanitorAI?

Most JanitorAI guides focus on free DeepSeek models, which makes sense for casual use. But Claude is a different category of model for creative writing specifically:

  • Longer character coherence. Claude holds a character's voice and backstory more consistently across hundreds of messages.
  • Better prose quality. Descriptions, dialogue, and emotional beats read more like a human writer than a text generator.
  • Nuanced tone handling. Switching between tense action, quiet moments, and character introspection — Claude navigates these shifts more naturally than most alternatives.
  • Follows persona cards closely. Claude tends to respect the specifics in your character card rather than drifting toward generic AI patterns.

If storytelling quality matters more than cost-per-message, Claude is worth the credit spend.

What You Need Before Starting

  • A MegaNova AI account (meganova.ai) — free to sign up, no credit card required for registration
  • A small credit deposit to access Claude models (MegaNova requires a minimum top-up for premium model access)
  • A JanitorAI account with an existing character to test with
  • About 10 minutes

Step 1: Create a MegaNova AI Account

Go to meganova.ai and sign up with your email. The free tier gives you access to some open models, but Claude requires a paid plan — you'll handle that in the next step.

Step 2: Add Credits to Your Account

Once logged in, navigate to your account dashboard and find the Billing or Credits section. Add a small amount — even $5 is a reasonable starting point. Claude models via MegaNova are billed per token, and roleplay conversations use tokens efficiently enough that $5 can last a while depending on your session length and context size.

Keep the MegaNova dashboard open — you'll need it for the next two steps.

Step 3: Get Your API Key

In the MegaNova dashboard, go to the API Keys section. Click Create New API Key, give it a name (something like "JanitorAI Claude"), and click Create.

Copy the key immediately. MegaNova only shows the full key once. Save it somewhere secure — a notes app or password manager — before closing the modal.

Your key will start with sk- and is what authorizes JanitorAI to make requests on your behalf.

Step 4: Find the Right Claude Model Name

In your MegaNova dashboard, go to the Models or Serverless Models section and look for Claude. MegaNova offers several Claude versions — at the time of writing, commonly available options include:

  • anthropic/claude-sonnet-4-6 — strong balance of speed and writing quality, good default choice
  • anthropic/claude-opus-4-6 — highest quality output, slower and more expensive per token
  • anthropic/claude-haiku-4-5 — fastest and cheapest, suitable for lighter sessions

For most JanitorAI storytelling use cases, Claude Sonnet is the right starting point. It produces noticeably better prose than most alternatives without the higher cost of Opus.

Click on your chosen model and switch to the API tab. Copy the exact model name string — you'll paste it into JanitorAI in the next step.

Step 5: Get the MegaNova Proxy URL

Still in your MegaNova dashboard, find the API endpoint for Claude. It will typically look like:

https://api.meganova.ai/v1/chat/completions

Copy this URL exactly. This is your Proxy URL for JanitorAI.

Step 6: Configure JanitorAI

  1. Log in to JanitorAI and open any character chat
  2. Click the ☰ menu (top-right of the chat window)
  3. Go to API Settings
  4. Click Add Configuration (or Using Proxy, depending on your UI version)
  5. Fill in the three fields:
  • Configuration Name: Something like "Claude via MegaNova" so you can switch back later
  • Model: Paste the exact Claude model name you copied from MegaNova (e.g., anthropic/claude-sonnet-4-6)
  • Other API / Proxy URL: Paste your MegaNova endpoint URL
  • API Key: Paste the sk- key you generated in Step 3

6.Click Save Settings

  1. Hard refresh the page — Ctrl+Shift+R on Windows, Cmd+Shift+R on Mac

Step 7: Test the Connection

Send a short, simple message — "Hello" or "How are you?" is enough. Don't start with a complex roleplay prompt until you've confirmed the connection is working.

A successful response should come back within 3–8 seconds. If you get an error, refer to the error guide below.

Claude performs best with a few specific settings:

  • Context Size: 16,384 (16k) is a solid default. Claude supports much larger context windows, but JanitorAI's interface can behave unpredictably at very high values. Start at 16k and increase only if you need to.
  • Max Tokens: Set to 1,000–1,500 for rich narrative responses. Claude tends to write longer, more detailed replies by default — this gives it room to work.
  • Temperature: 0.9 to 1.1. Claude at lower temperatures can feel slightly more formal. A little warmth in temperature produces more natural, expressive output.
  • System Prompt: Claude respects system prompts closely. If your character card feels like it's being ignored, try adding a short line at the top of your system prompt like: "Stay fully in character as [name] at all times. Never break character or refer to yourself as an AI."

Switching Between Claude and DeepSeek

One of the practical advantages of setting up multiple configurations in JanitorAI is that you can switch models mid-session. If you want Claude's prose quality for a key story moment but want to save credits on lighter dialogue exchanges, you can flip back to a free DeepSeek model.

In API Settings, you can save multiple named configurations and switch between them from the same menu — no need to re-enter your keys each time.

Quick Troubleshooting

  • 401 error: Your API key is wrong or doesn't match MegaNova's expected format. Generate a new key and try again.
  • 404 error: The model name or Proxy URL has a typo. Copy both directly from the MegaNova dashboard — don't type them manually.
  • Empty response: Raise Max Tokens to at least 800 and check that your MegaNova account has sufficient credits.
  • Responses feel generic: Add more specificity to your character card and system prompt. Claude follows instructions closely — the more detail you give it about voice, tone, and character history, the better the output.

Claude isn't a free option, but for storytelling-focused users, the quality gap is noticeable. If you've been frustrated by characters that feel flat or prose that sounds like a machine — this is the upgrade worth trying.
