Current Limitations of SillyTavern's OpenAI Image Integration

Current Limitations of SillyTavern's OpenAI Image Integration

SillyTavern has become a default choice for local, customizable AI roleplay, largely because it treats chat completions as genuinely provider-agnostic — any OpenAI-compatible endpoint plugs right in.

Image generation doesn't get the same treatment yet, and it's worth understanding exactly where the gap is if you're planning a setup that depends on it.

No generic OpenAI-compatible image endpoint

The core limitation is structural: SillyTavern's built-in image provider does not currently offer a generic OpenAI-compatible image endpoint option. Instead, image generation is implemented through predefined integrations for specific services such as OpenAI/DALL·E, ComfyUI, Stable Diffusion, and FLUX.

While chat completions treat "OpenAI-compatible" as a flexible category that can point to any conforming endpoint, image generation treats it as a fixed list of named vendors. If your provider isn't on that list—even if its API fully adheres to the OpenAI specification—there is no built-in route to connect it, and requests will typically fail with a 404 Not Found error rather than a clear configuration prompt.

The workaround is a community extension, not a core feature

Community-developed extensions—such as sillytavern-image-gen—exist specifically to bridge this gap, adding support for OpenAI-compatible reverse proxies that SillyTavern’s native panel lacks. While this workaround works well for providers like MegaNova, it introduces a few trade-offs:

  • Maintenance Dependency: You rely on a third-party extension remaining active and keeping pace with SillyTavern’s rapid update cycle.
  • Added Setup Friction: Configuration requires extra steps, as settings must be managed within the extension rather than SillyTavern’s main interface.
  • Divided Troubleshooting: Diagnosing issues becomes fragmented across two separate systems - SillyTavern’s native image panel (which remains incompatible) and the extension's own configuration menu.

Model and provider coverage varies

Because native support is limited to named integrations, providers outside that list are entirely dependent on extension support to work at all. If an extension doesn't yet support a particular provider's authentication scheme or request format, there's currently no fallback within SillyTavern itself — you're waiting on either the extension to add support or SillyTavern's core image panel to add a generic option.

No first-class in-chat model switching for images

Chat completions in SillyTavern let you switch models fairly fluidly as part of normal use. Image generation, routed through an extension and a fixed provider configuration, is less flexible — switching image models mid-session generally means going back into extension settings rather than adjusting on the fly within the conversation.

What this means if you're setting up image generation

  • Don't assume "OpenAI-compatible" chat support implies OpenAI-compatible image support — check SillyTavern's native provider list first.
  • If your provider isn't listed, plan for an extension like sillytavern-image-gen from the start rather than troubleshooting a 404 as if it were a misconfiguration.
  • Expect image generation setup to be a distinct process from chat setup, not an extension of the same configuration.

Looking ahead

If SillyTavern adds native support for configurable OpenAI-compatible image endpoints, this gap should close, bringing image generation setup in line with how chat completions already work.

Until then, the practical reality is that OpenAI-compatible image generation in SillyTavern is a community-supported capability layered on top of a client that wasn't originally built with it in mind — functional, but with more moving parts than the chat side of the same setup.
