There's no single best model for AI agents. An agent does several different jobs: planning a task, calling tools, classifying a request, writing a reply, searching documents. Each job rewards different strengths, and the price gap between models that can do it is often more than tenfold.

This guide explains what an agent actually needs from a model, how to match models to the jobs inside an agent, and which models MegaNova serves today with their prices. All prices in this post are taken from the [MegaNova pricing page](https://www.meganova.ai/pricing?ref=blog.meganova.ai) as of November 2, 2026\. Model catalogs and prices change often, so check the page before you commit.

## **What an agent needs from a model**

A model that writes good prose isn't automatically a good agent model. For agents, these properties matter more:

| Property | Why it matters for agents | How to check it |
| --------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Tool calling | The agent has to choose the right tool and pass valid arguments | Run your real tools and look for the calls in your service's logs |
| Structured output | Your code acts on fields, not free text | Validate every reply against your schema; count failures |
| Instruction following | Agents run on long system prompts with rules | Test the rules that matter most, especially "say you don't know" |
| Context length | Plans, retrieved documents and history add up quickly | Check the model's context window against your longest real task |
| Latency | Multi-step agents call the model many times per task | Time a full task, not a single reply |
| Cost | Those many calls multiply the price per token | Measure cost per completed task |

None of these show up in a one-question demo. They show up when you run your own tasks.

## **Match the model to the job**

Most agents don't need their most expensive model for every call. Split the work by role, and pick a model tier for each:

| Job inside the agent | What it needs | Typical tier |
| --------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------- | --------------------------- |
| Planning and hard reasoning | Breaking a goal into steps, handling ambiguity, recovering from errors | Frontier |
| Main workhorse steps | Reliable tool calls and structured output, many times per task | Mid-range |
| Classification and routing | A short, schema-valid decision, fast and cheap | Fast / small |
| Summaries and drafts | Good writing at volume | Mid-range or fast |
| Knowledge retrieval | Turning documents and questions into vectors, then re-ordering results | Embedding and rerank models |

A common pattern is a strong model that plans and a cheaper model that executes the steps. Whether it's right for you depends on your tasks, so treat the tiers as a starting point and confirm with your own tests.

## **Models on MegaNova, November 2026**

A selection of text and multimodal models MegaNova serves, grouped by price band. Prices are input / output per 1 million tokens, from the [MegaNova pricing page](https://www.meganova.ai/pricing?ref=blog.meganova.ai) as of November 2, 2026\. Price bands describe cost, not quality.

For knowledge retrieval, MegaNova also serves **Qwen3-Embedding-8B** (embeddings) and **BGE-reranker-v2-m3** (reranking), both under the free quota. MegaNova's own **Manta-Mini-1.0**, **Manta-Flash-1.0** and **Manta-Pro-1.0** also run under the free quota, which makes them a low-cost way to start testing.

The full catalog, including image, video, audio and roleplay models, is on the pricing page.

## **How to choose**

1. **Shortlist two or three models per role.** Pick across price bands, so you can see what the extra cost buys for your tasks.
2. **Test with your own tasks.** Use real prompts, your actual tools and your schemas. Include questions your sources can't answer and tools that fail.
3. **Check the agent behaviors, not just the answers.** Count valid tool calls, schema failures, and cases where the model ignored a rule.
4. **Measure cost per completed task.** A cheaper model that needs extra retries or longer prompts can cost more per task than a pricier one that gets it right the first time.
5. **Time the whole task.** For multi-step agents, total latency matters more than the speed of one reply.
6. **Re-test when things change.** New model versions and price updates arrive often; rerun your test set before switching.

Public benchmarks can help you build a shortlist, but they rarely use your tools, your data or your rules. Your own test set is what tells you which model to ship.

## **Getting started on MegaNova**

> MegaNova's API is OpenAI-compatible, so you can test several models with the same code by changing only the model ID. The base URL is https://api.meganova.ai/v1.

For testing, the free tiers help. Registration is free with no credit card required, and the Explorer tier includes a free daily quota of 550 messages on eligible models. Check the [pricing page](https://www.meganova.ai/pricing?ref=blog.meganova.ai) for which models are eligible and for the quotas on higher tiers.

## **Conclusion**

Choosing a model for an AI agent means choosing one for each job: a stronger model where planning and hard reasoning happen, and faster, cheaper models for routine steps, classification and retrieval. Shortlist across price bands, test with your own tools and tasks, and compare cost per completed task rather than price per token. Prices and catalogs move quickly, so date your decision and re-test when they change.
